Panama Bay Sanitation Project

In Panama, NKLAC is assisting the Panamanian Ministry of Health in implementing this crucial multi-phase program to capture and treat wastewater discharges that currently discharge to rivers throughout Panama City as well as the Bay of Panama.  NKLAC commenced this project by performing a feasibilty study to identify the most appropriate scheme for the interception, tranport, and treatment of the wastewater.   Consequently, we developed the basic engineering of the accepted scheme.  Included in this phase was the identification of a tunnel as the interception method, and we performed the geotechnical evaluation to develop the tunnel critieria.

Currently NKLAC is assisting the Panamanian government in two projects.  The first is the supervision of multiple construction contracts for the installation of the medium- to large-sized collector and trunk sewers throughout Panama City.  In the second, we are assisting in the implementation of two design-build contracts, one for the implementation of the interceptor system and the other for the wastewater treatment system.

San José, Costa Rica Metropolitan Area Sanitation

NKLAC assisted the Costa Rican Government in performing studies and engineering to obtain financing from the Japanese Government for the implementation of a wastewater interception and treatment system. The growth of the city over the last decades, the deterioration of the water source and the desire to recuperate the environment initiated this project.  The program seeks to expand and strengthen the wastewater collection system and develop a wastewater treatment plant to eliminate the biological load before discharging to the Tarcoles River. The system of collection and subcollection pipelines will be improved and expanded to capture all wastewaters, and deep tunnel interceptor will convey the flows to the proposed wastewater treatment plant.
