Renewable Energy

The decomposition of solid and liquid waste under anaerobic conditions produce large quantities of methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times greater than carbon dioxide. The proper handling of waste can reduce emissions of methane gas. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into wood. Forests are therefore considered huge warehouses of CO2. Deforestation and illegal logging and burning not only destroy the forests and degrade biodiversity, but also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The reforestation of cleared areas holds the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus can be considered as "negative emissions".

Kyoto Protocol and Emissions Trading
The Kyoto Protocol commits Japan and other industrialized countries to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol provides flexible mechanisms by which the reductions in emissions in Third World countries can be credited to the investor country.
The Kyoto mechanisms apply many rules to ensure that the investment actually contributes to reducing emissions. To implement a mechanism to qualify for Kyoto requires preparation of complex projects.
Clean Development Mechanism
The formation of Clean Development Mechanism projects requires special steps prescribed by the Marrakesh Accords (operating rules for the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation).
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) - Countries with targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (industrialized countries) can earn credits for reducing emissions by investing in emission-saving projects in countries which have no targets (developing countries).
Joint Implementation - Similar to the CDM, except that both the host country and the donor or investor will have emission reduction targets.
Emissions Trading - Reducing emissions can be negotiable matter. If an entity makes a reduction in greenhouse gases, the entity B can purchase these reductions to meet their emission reduction obligations.
