Climate Change & Environmental

The Nippon Koei Group is a provider of the highest quality environmental consulting services.  With our disciplined approach and with our genuine desire to create a positive impact in all the places where we work, Nippon Koei seeks to achieve the ideal balance between development, poverty alleviation, and care for the environment.

The environmental specialists of our company cover a wide range of fields, such as soil and forests.  Furthermore, we have biologists and engineers in wastewater management and pollution control.  The magnitude of our experience enables us to provide solutions to world heritage of forested areas and urban slums, from the watershed planning and management to the construction of sanitary landfills.

Global warming is perhaps the most important environmental issue facing the world today.  Unless atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide are contained within safe levels, global warming could have devastating consequences.

With its long history of improving social capital and guidance in the management of natural resources in developing countries around the world, our company is ready to assist in projects that reduce greenhouse gases, alleviate poverty and create economic and social development.

The company has extensive experience in key technical areas related to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, such as renewable energy, forestry, waste management, and land transport.  From large-scale development of renewable energy to the development of human resource capabilities, the company has expertise in the implementation of mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol and emissions trading.

Planning and Administration

Our expertise in planning and environmental management has been successfully applied to numerous studies aimed at the adoption of real and innovative plans.  Among our experience are plans to complete environmental management of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Luban complex in Latvia (site nominated by the Ramsar Convention).  Plans have also been made for watershed management in the Philippines and Laos.  In Latin America, Nippon Koei have developed major projects in Brazil.

Environmental Concerns

Population growth and economic development inevitably puts pressure on the environment.  Our engineers and environmental experts and institutions can provide accurate plans and engineering solutions to meet the challenges presented when growth exceeds the capacity of pollution control and management of solid and liquid wastes.

We offer a complete range of procedures for assessing environmental and social impact for projects of all types and sizes.  We ensure that development needs to be balanced with environmental issues.

The projects of our company contribute to the improvement of the environment in a variety of places like China, Zimbabwe and Indonesia.

Renewable Energy

The experience of the firm extends from renewable hydropower to traditional technologies such as solar radiation, organic fuel, heat, fuel cells, wind energy, and tides and waves.  We have made many plans and feasibility studies and have extensive experience in construction, operation and maintenance.

We specialize in the implementation of master plans for sustainable energy development.  This kind of master plan is vital that rural electrification is contributing to infrastructure development in a variety of areas such as educational facilities, hospitals and community halls.  Nippon Koei recently conducted a study for the electrification of public facilities in remote villages in Brazil: solar energy proved to be a viable alternative to the greenhouse gases produced by diesel generators traditionally used for the electrification of remote rural communities.

Waste Management

The decomposition of solid and liquid waste under anaerobic conditions produce large quantities of methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times greater than carbon dioxide.  The proper handling of waste can reduce emissions of methane gas.  With our experience in waste management and awareness to reduce greenhouse gases reaffirms our efforts to incorporate strategies to reduce methane gas emissions and increase generation of electricity from landfill gas in any waste management system that is proposed or designed.

Transportation

Motor vehicles are one of  the largest contributors to the emission of greenhouse gases and the main source of pollution in modern cities.  Nippon Koei promotes the introduction of mass transportation such as rail, light rail and ships in the search for cleaner transport.  We specialize in developing master plans to introduce mass transportation systems, construction of railways and seaports.

Reforestation

Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into wood.  Forests are therefore considered huge warehouses of CO2.  Deforestation and illegal logging and burning not only destroy the forests and degrade biodiversity, but also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.  The reforestation of cleared areas holds the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus can be considered as "negative emissions".

We specialize in the development of forestry science projects that solicit the involvement of people in the region and the development of capacity building to adopt sustainable forest management.

Kyoto Protocol and Emissions Trading

The Kyoto Protocol commits Japan and other industrialized countries to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases.  The Kyoto Protocol provides flexible mechanisms by which the reductions in emissions in Third World countries can be credited to the investor country.

The Kyoto mechanisms apply many rules to ensure that the investment actually contributes to reducing emissions.  To implement a mechanism to qualify for Kyoto requires preparation of complex projects.

Clean Development Mechanism

The formation of Clean Development Mechanism projects requires special steps prescribed by the Marrakesh Accords (operating rules for the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation).

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) - Countries with targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (industrialized countries) can earn credits for reducing emissions by investing in emission-saving projects in countries which have no targets (developing countries).

Joint Implementation - Similar to the CDM, except that both the host country and  the donor or investor will have emission reduction targets.

Emissions Trading - Reducing emissions can be negotiable matter.  If an entity makes a reduction in greenhouse gases, the entity B can purchase these reductions to meet their emission reduction obligations.

Our company has experience in preparing documents for specific projects in the fields of high energy efficiency and renewable energy.  If your goal is to gain credits for reducing carbon emissions, Nippon Koei can provide all the help you need, from project design to implementation and registration and exchange of carbon credits.
