Energy

The Nippon Koei Group is a leader in the field of energy supply.  Specializing in electric power generation, particularly hydropower, our experience is indisputable and we have been appointed to prepare master plans for national and international energy development in Japan and abroad.  Based on our traditional strengths in the hydroelectric sector, we also offer specialized services in thermal power, renewable energy and energy distribution systems.

Our company is a leader among energy consultants.  We have participated in national energy projects in Indonesia and Korea.  On smaller scales we also have studied the role of energy in integrated water resources development for all river basins.

In Latin America, the company undertakes projects such as prefeasibility studies and economic and financial analysis and design and supervision of construction of the hydroelectric plant of Iguazu, Paraguay.  In Peru, the company participated in the border electric implementation program PAFE II, making the monitoring of civil works and electromechanical erection six transmission lines and twelve small electrical systems.

Hydroelectric

For over 50 years Nippon Koei Group has been providing consulting services in the development of hydro energy.  We have participated in hundreds of projects in Japan and abroad with clients ranging from multilateral funding agencies and governments to private investors.  Our strength is our ability to provide an extensive range of services throughout the life of the project, such as:

Planning, study and design of dams, power generation facilities.
Construction supervision.
Launching facilities, operational guidance, training of personnel.
Maintenance of facilities and administration for the operation.

We provide our services with regard to the environment and our experts are constantly reviewing and contributing to all stages of projects.  Through hundreds of assignments, the company has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and has built a force of the highest technical quality, developing new approaches and techniques, and is reinforced from our corps of engineers with an engineering lab that features point technology and a computerized system especially adapted to our needs.  Our firm has the capacity to efficiently undertake projects to develop hydro power, regardless of their size, location or complexity.

Thermal Power

Thermal energy projects include development of natural gas pipelines, coal-fired power plants, combined cycle natural gas power plants, and gas development projects for local energy supplies.

Our services cover two key areas: 1) The harvesting of new hydrocarbon resources, and 2) increasing the efficiency of thermal power generation.  In the case of increased efficiency, we are particularly focused on reducing the amount of greenhouse gases for a given level of coal, oil or gas combusted.  These developments are appropriate for adoption by the Clean Development Mechanism and joint implementation projects, such as those set under the Kyoto Protocol.

The burning of fossil fuel to produce electricity generates a large amount of greenhouse gases.  Thus, projects that improve the efficiency of energy use represents an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gase emissions.  The company has been responsible for converting a open-cycle gas turbine to a combined cycle configuration.  Combined cycle means that electricity is generated by burning in a gas turbine engine and also taking advantage of the heat generated in that turbine to create steam to power steam turbines generators.  This project increases the energy output by 40% for the same fuel consumption, which represents a significant reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases if it is multiplied through all existing plants and future gas supplied plants.

Renewable Energy

Replacing traditional energy-based fuel by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, wave, and geothermal, mankind can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.  Energy specialists of our company have the expertise, experience and commitment necessary to plan and implement projects of green energy.

The fact is that renewable energy can not be implemented everywhere.  It is relatively expensive per unit of energy and requires certain conditions (availability of resources, space, wind) before it can be technically feasible.  But in many developing nations where there is still no electricity grid or a well-developed network of gas supply, the opportunities for renewable energy are considerable.

Our company has all the necessary skills to analyze the energy markets and availability of resources to determine the best mix of renewable energy and traditional.  We take a demand-driven approach to identify when and where renewable energy can best be adopted.  Our expertise is composed of specialists in solar, wind, hydro and biomass energy as well as conserving energy and reducing emission of carbon dioxide.  Our solid experience in conventional energy and a global network of human resources, enables us to be able to formulate plans for the development of realistic energy compounds for the best mix of traditional and renewable energy by making maximum use of emissions trading.

Power Transmission and Distribution

As energy capacity expands to meet demand, so grows the needs for energy transmission.  New primary transmission lines, grid substations and distribution facilities should be developed to provide a stable and reliable energy supply.  The company offers a wide range of engineering services for power transmission and distribution, including initial research, planning, designing, bidding, and construction supervision.

The company undertook a project to develop transmission and substation in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka to improve the performance of the network.  First they identified the need to expand the existing 132-kV transmission line network and provide new and improved substations during the preparation of the Electrical Transmission Master Plan in 1996.  Also, we provided the engineering studies and detailed design, prepared the specifications and licitation documents, performed bidding assistance, assisted with contract ajudication, and supervised the construction.

The firm was also appointed to implement a project where we provided a complete range of engineering services to enhance and strengthen the energy supply system in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  This project reinforced the existing 22-kV distribution lines, installed transformers and switches, built low-voltage lines, and a load control center.
